Research – JPI Oceans, 4 projects on microplastics

04 settembre 2015

Four research projects have been selected for funding, 7,5 million of euros, from ten member countries of the JPI Oceans

The Joint Programming Initiative Healthy and Productive Seas and Oceans (JPI Oceans) is a coordinating and integrating platform. It aims to:

  • enable the advent of a knowledge based maritime economy, maximizing its value in a sustainable way,
  • ensure good environmental Status of the seas and optimize planning of activities in the marine space
  • optimize the response to climate change and mitigate human impacts on the marine environment.

The participant countries are: Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Ireland, Lithuania, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and United Kingdom. Malta is an observer to the Management Board.

Through the call for proposals "Ecological aspects of micro-plastics in the marine environment", closed in March, 4 research projects have been selected:

  1. BASEMAN - Defining the baselines and standards for microplastics analyses in European waters,
  2. EPHEMARE - Ecotoxicological effects of microplastics in marine ecosystems,
  3. PLASTOX - Direct and indirect ecotoxicological impacts of microplastics on marine organisms,
  4. WEATHER-MIC - How microplastic weathering changes its transport, fate and toxicity in the marine environmen.

The funding of the research is made available by Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.
