Yesterday, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, convened key leaders of the European industry and other stakeholders for the launch of the Strategic Dialogue on the Future of the European Steel Sector, aimed at addressing the sector's challenges to ensure its full functionality.
The Strategic Dialogue on the Future of the Steel Sector is among the new Commission's priorities because the steel industry is a fundamental component of the EU economy and a key factor for its strategic autonomy, thus contributing to the achievement of the EU Competitiveness Compass objectives.
The sectors for which the steel industry is crucial are the most significant for the Union, such as automotive, construction, defense, zero-emission technologies, electric vehicles, and critical infrastructure. Moreover, with about 500 production sites spread across 22 member states, the steel sector contributes 80 billion euros to the European GDP and ensures over 2.5 million jobs for EU citizens.
However, despite its centrality, the sector is currently under significant pressure, mainly due to high energy costs.
