Advancing Bio-based Innovations in the Food Industry: Focus on Fermentation

This hybrid workshop will take place in Brussels, with options to attend in person or online via Webex. Registration is mandatory for both options. The workshop will focus on industrial applications of fermentation technologies, highlighting SMEs using biomass, precision, and gas fermentation. Presentations will be followed by a Q&A session.

A panel of experts will discuss research and innovation, infrastructure, the role of farmers, public acceptance, market development, profitability, and pricing. Micro fermentation will also be discussed. The regulatory framework will be addressed in a dedicated study announced in March 2024.

An open discussion will allow participants to share their views. The main objective is to identify key challenges and opportunities for food production enabled by modern fermentation techniques in Europe. Registration ends on 4 November 2024.

On 20 March 2024, the Commission presented a communication on biotechnology and biomanufacturing in the EU, highlighting the potential of fermentation in sustainable food production.
