JUSTEM final event - No country for old coal: Transformative action for regional Just Transitions

The JUSTEM final event will focus on the pressing need to phase out coal in the transition to a sustainable future. However, it will also explore the complexities of this transition, which extends beyond technical reform to address concerns about energy affordability, dependency, and competitiveness. The session will emphasize the importance of a holistic approach to ensuring that the transition is just, leaving no one behind, and fostering coordination between EU and national policies. It will feature discussions on the promotion of skills, the creation of quality jobs and the broader social impacts of the transition, particularly in relation to energy poverty and employment.

During the event, research findings, developed tools and policy recommendations will be presented by project participants. These discussions will engage a wide range of stakeholders, including European Commission representatives, policymakers, NGOs and citizen groups, in tackling the challenges of energy poverty, gender equality and community participation in the transition process. The event will also feature a panel discussion on the intersection of just transition and housing affordability, offering insights into how housing and energy poverty can be addressed within the broader context of a coal-free future.
