Artificial intelligence (AI), in its broadest sense, is intelligence exhibited by machines, particularly computer systems. It is a field of research in computer science that develops and studies methods and software that enable machines to perceive their environment and use learning and intelligence to take actions that maximize their chances of achieving defined goals. Such machines may be called AIs. Through the Horizon Europe and Digital Europe programmes, the European Commission invests more than EUR 1 billion per year in AI, with measures to fund and scale innovative ideas and solutions. The aim is to mobilise additional investments from the private sector and the Member States to reach an annual investment volume of EUR 20 billion over the course of this decade.
