Webinar on the Potential of Permissionless Blockchains in Finance
The European Commission's Directorate General for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union (DG FISMA) is hosting a webinar to discuss a report on permissionless blockchains in finance. The report, authored by Professor Fabian Schär from the University of Basel, explores the integration of permissionless blockchain technology into the traditional financial sector. The report highlights the advantages of using an open base layer, such as transparency, inclusivity, and increased competition, while addressing challenges like scalability, privacy, transaction sequencing, finality, and governance. It suggests that public permissionless blockchains could reduce dependencies and mitigate monopolistic market structures without requiring a platform-wide gatekeeper.

Training and workshops: Webinar on the potential of permissionless blockchains in finance
The 75-minute webinar will include a presentation of the report's findings and a Q&A session.
DG FISMA invites industry professionals, researchers, regulators, policymakers, and other stakeholders interested in distributed ledger technology (DLT) in finance to participate. The webinar aims to foster dialogue and support the responsible use of DLT in Europe.
No registration is needed, and participants can join via the provided webinar link. The event will take place online on Thursday, 20 February 2025, from 14:00 to 15:15 CET.
