Conferences and summits: 2024 Fisheries Science Seminar - Artificial Intelligence
Brussel
Each year the Directorate General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) organises a science seminar, which brings together a wide range of stakeholders such as scientists, fishing industry, NGOs, and representatives of the European Commission, Parliament, Council and Member States, to discuss topical scientific developments and links to the implementation of the common fisheries policy. This seminar provides a platform for dialogue on the current and future science challenges, as well as a networking opportunity for all stakeholders, who have an opportunity to reflect on the state of the scientific advice and research on fisheries, and the challenges ahead. This in turn feeds into DG MARE’s internal reflections to shape future policies or adjust current ones, of further relevance ahead of the next Commission mandate. Following the opening and keynote, the seminar will be broken down into three thematic sessions, which will run in parallel, focusing respectively on: fisheries conservation and management, benefits and challenges for fishermen, and data collection and analysis. The breakout session will consist of presentations from selected speakers (2-3 per session) of about 10 minutes each. All sessions will be available for online audience to watch. After the coffee break, on-site participants from each session will engage in discussion groups, moderated by DG MARE colleagues, reflecting on AI applications in fisheries. This will be an opportunity to gather participants views and expertise and to allow participants to exchange further with speakers about their research activities. Online participants will be given the opportunity to engage in an online discussion group cross-cutting the different sessions. To better prepare the exchanges that will take place during the seminar, we compiled a survey with selected questions on AI and fisheries. The answers received will be used to guide the discussion among participants during the event and will be included in the seminar’s report. Your participation to the survey is key for a richer discussion during the seminar! Reply to the survey Deadline: 11 September 2024.There are 5 sections in this survey: it will only take a few minutes to complete them all. The survey is anonymous and can be filled in individually. However, should you wish to dig deeper in your feedback and complement the survey with some input that you would like to be linked to you or your institution, you can do so by getting back to us by email at: MARE-C3ec [dot] europa [dot] eu (MARE-C3[at]ec[dot]europa[dot]eu).The 2023 Fisheries Science Seminar focused on the role of Citizen Science in supporting fisheries science and management.  The 2022 Fisheries Science Seminar focused on the implementation of an Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM).The 2021 Fisheries Science Seminar focused on Marine Protected Areas, and their possible benefits for attaining the objectives of the EU Biodiversity Strategy.

The aim of the event is to hold a general exchange on the recently strengthened political focus on consolidation (across various market segments), considering its possible upsides, downsides and regulatory constraints. This discussion should take place against the background of the objectives on the capital markets union (CMU) and EU competitiveness. It will bring together investment funds (‘buy-side’), financial institutions (sell-side) and infrastructure operators. The Commission views consolidation as a market-driven process with EU legislation aiming to remove obstacles and provide incentives to that process rather than trying to impose consolidation per se and the objective of this workshop would be to identify any obstacles to a market driven process. As the seats for this event are limited, the Commission staff will review the expressions of interest in order to ensure a balanced audience. Please wait for an explicit confirmation that your attendance is approved before proceeding with travel arrangements. If multiple registrations per organisation have been received for physical presence, the Commission staff might limit the physical representation to a single person per organisation. Others are welcome to follow the event online.Register for the roundtableThe event will be web streamed. The web stream links will be available here soon.

Exhibitions: European Day of Languages 2024
The European Day of Languages is a well-established opportunity to raise awareness about language learning and linguistic diversity. To celebrate the European Day of Languages, the European Commission is organizing two virtual conferences on 26 September. Join us online! This year, we will focus on the results of the 2024 Eurobarometer on Europeans and their languages and compare them with the 2012 Eurobarometer results. We will connect live with some of the EU countries that achieved positive results, including Finland, Spain and Czech Republic. Together, we will try to identify key factors of success. This year, the EU celebrates 20 years of its biggest enlargement: on 1 May 2004, ten countries (Cyprus, Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia) joined the European Union, which grew from 15 to 25 members. This historic enlargement of the EU, increasing the number of Member States by two-thirds overnight, was the culmination of a long accession process. It signalled the reunification of a Europe that had been divided for half a century. The enlargement made the EU the world's largest integrated market and increased trade between Member States, contributing to economic growth both in the EU and the acceding countries. Have a look at the draft programme! The 2004 enlargement languages will be in the spotlight: our interpreters will be providing simultaneous interpretation from all of them into French, German and English, providing participants with a nice opportunity to witness simultaneous interpretation in action.Celebrate the European Day of Languages with us! Check out what is happening in your country!
