The European Commission has announced the results of the 2023 calls for proposals under the European Defence Fund (EDF), supporting 54 joint European defence research and development projects with over €1 billion. This announcement marks a significant milestone in the EU's efforts to bolster its defence capabilities, as well as make vital shifts towards further integration.

A big boost for EU defence.

The selected projects will contribute to the EU's capability priorities, such as improving situational awareness in space, countering hypersonic missiles, and developing next-generation fighter systems and main battle tanks. Notably, the MARTE and FMBTech projects will bring together more than 70 industrial players and research organisations to work on the design and systems for a main battle tank platform for use across Europe.

Other notable projects include E-CUAS, which will advance technologies to counter unmanned aerial systems like drones, involving 24 beneficiaries from 12 Member States and Norway. The SRB2 project will improve a novel suspension system for heavy armoured vehicles, while EDC2 will result in a prototype for the European patrol corvette.
