In May, Brussels will publish a new call for the Interregional Innovation Investments (I3), the measure that supports the development of European value chains by leveraging the complementarity of the Smart Specializations of different EU regions. This is stated in the 2025-2027 work program of the I3 Instrument, which allocates almost 180 million euros for this three-year period.

This continues the operation of the European instrument that supports interregional investments in innovation and is part of the European Innovation Agenda.

Interregional Innovation Investments (I3) Instrument: What is it and how does it work?

Born from the experience gained with the interregional pilot actions, the Interregional Innovation Investments Instrument (I3) is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) with a budget of 570 million euros for the period 2021-2027.

As its name suggests, I3 has a very clear and ambitious goal: to promote cooperation between European regions that share and/or have complementarities in certain areas of their Smart Specialization Strategy (the "I" of Interregional), in order to support the innovation of their respective regional ecosystems (the "I" of Innovation), through the provision of both financial and advisory support for the realization of investments (the "I" of Investments).
