With the publication of the report “Addressing European Research & Innovation Challenges for System Transitions in Energy and Mobility”, the authors - Frank W. Geels, Pierpaolo Cazzola, Wolfgang Ketter, Paula Kivimaa - aim to offer recommendations and insights regarding the priorities to consider for developing research and innovation in the clean energy and mobility sectors. Generally, the R&I sector in Europe is not in great shape—due to several reasons, starting with the lack of private sector funding—especially when compared to major global competitors, primarily the United States and China.
The document presents a long-term vision for future energy and mobility systems aligned with European ecological and socioeconomic goals, foremost among them being net-zero by 2050. To push towards realizing this vision, the report explores nine “innovation pathways” in energy and mobility systems, evaluated against four contemporary challenges affecting the two sectors, which are in turn connected to four significant ongoing macroeconomic changes.
