population of 930, 2022. itis located 2,-3, kilometers from major metropolitanmarkets, where service delivery costs are high because ofdispersed population. about 90 of the population lives on threemain islands of viti levu, where the capital of suva is located,vanua levu, and taveuni. the locations of the project will be inthe islands of vanua levu and taveuni.degraded and insufficient transport infrastructure. thecontinuous economic development of fiji has brought along anincrease in transport traffic, but the quality of its infrastructurecontinues to lag significantly behind. the poor state of fiji'sinfrastructure is attributed to some historical factors including iinsufficient infrastructure investment, ii inadequate orincomplete infrastructure plans, limited access tointernational expertise, and iv reduced sustainability due to lackof resources for operation and maintenance. less than optimalinfrastructure leads to higher economic cost which, in turn,undermines business potential and economic opportunities. someimpacts on the transportation systems are traffic disruptions dueto flooding, an increase in maintenance requirements due tomore frequent washouts, and the inundation of bridge structures.poor road network and bridges. fiji's road network ischaracterized by spine or circumferential main roads and feederroads with few alternative routes. it is prone to disruption causedby heavy rainfall and flooding, which is often exacerbated bytropical cyclones. the significant increase in heavy truck trafficon fiji's road network has led to the accelerated deterioration ofits aging highway, resulting in the imposition of load restrictionson some bridges. these restrictions have caused substantiallosses in time and opportunities for businesses. the inadequateload bearing capacity of the existing bridges is one of the factorscontributing to the inefficiency of the road network.impacts of climate change and disasters. the transportinfrastructure, especially roads and bridges, faces the brunt ofimpacts from disasters and climate change. most of the areaswhere these bridges are located are at high risk from disastersand climate change, such as floods, landslides, sea level rise,storm surges, damaging winds, etc. these risks are set toincrease with changes in natural hazard patterns due to climatechange and increase in exposure of people and assets due topublic settlement in flood-prone riverine and low-lying areas. newinfrastructure that can withstand the impacts of climate changeand disasters needs to be built.limited climate, disasters, and gender planning. fiji's roadauthority fra is responsible for planning, design, construction,and maintenance of infrastructure. however, the capacity of frato assess climate risk and disaster and incorporate adaptationand mitigation into planning, design, and asset management isvery limited and needs to be strengthened. in addition, women'saccess to
