Annual Research Conference 2024: Europe in a Changing World
The Annual Research Conference (ARC) is the European Commission’s flagship research forum, bringing together leading researchers in economics and policymakers. The 2024 edition, held on 21-22 November in Ispra, aims to explore the implications of global trade trends, changes in global value chains, and their impact on economic efficiency, capital allocation, and innovation incentives. Key topics include low-carbon technologies, industrial policies in strategic sectors like defence, energy, healthcare, and high-tech, and their effects on the EU single market.
The conference will feature paper presentations selected by the Scientific Programme Committee, with discussions in parallel sessions. A keynote speech will be delivered by Kalina Manova from University College London. A satellite event on global supply chain reallocation is also organized by the Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs in Brussels.
Europe faces challenges in maintaining economic stability amid de-globalisation trends, affecting global value chains and economic efficiency. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted vulnerabilities in global supply chains, prompting nations to reassess industrial strategies, particularly in healthcare and technology. Industrial policy is crucial for supply chain resilience, economic diversification, and reducing vulnerabilities during crises.
Geopolitical tensions and trade wars have led nations to embrace industrial policy to secure competitive advantages in strategic sectors. The EU is developing a common defence industrial strategy to enhance readiness and security while preserving the single market. The 25th anniversary of the Euro prompts reflection on its role in the Eurozone's stability and growth, and its potential international influence.
