This workshop, organized by the Directorate General for Energy (DG ENER), will gather European Commission representatives and stakeholders to discuss the import requirements of the EU Methane Regulation. The regulation, published on 15 July 2024, is the first in the world to regulate methane emissions from imports. It mandates importers of oil, gas, and coal into the EU to report methane emissions data annually from 2025 and demonstrate compliance with monitoring and reporting standards from 2027. By 2028, importers must report on the methane intensity of their products, and by 2030, ensure it is below maximum values set by the Commission. Non-compliance will result in penalties rather than bans. The workshop will be held online on 15 October 2024 for Eastern Hemisphere participants and on 17 October 2024 for Western Hemisphere participants.

The agenda includes a presentation of the EU Methane Regulation by Malcolm McDowell, Team Leader, Methane Regulation, European Commission, and interventions by Andreas Guth, Secretary General of Eurogas, Brandon Locke, Europe Policy Manager, Methane, Clean Air Task Force, and Maria Olczak, Research Fellow, Oxford Institute for Energy Studies. The event will feature discussions and Q&A sessions.
