These include chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear hazards, ad will be partly backed by EU4Health.

The first project places paramount importance on fortifying health security capabilities across a diverse spectrum of regions, encompassing EU Member States, the European Economic Area (EEA), EU candidate nations, and those engaged in the Eastern Partnership. It adopts a multifaceted approach, aiming to bolster preventive measures, enhance readiness, refine detection mechanisms, and streamline response strategies.

This comprehensive endeavor addresses an array of potential threats, ranging from the wrath of natural calamities like earthquakes and floods to the insidious dangers posed by biohazards and the destabilizing impact of man-made conflicts. A pivotal aspect of this initiative lies in the augmentation of emergency coordination and collaboration, not only within individual nations but also on an international scale.

Recognizing the interconnected nature of health security, the EU4Health programme pledges substantial support, allocating 6.4 million euros over the ensuing five years to facilitate the realization of these objectives. Through concerted efforts and sustained investment, this project endeavors to fortify the resilience of communities, mitigate risks, and safeguard the well-being of populations across the designated regions.

The second project marks a concerted acceleration in endeavors aimed at tackling the intricate challenges posed by chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) hazards, strategically targeting the EU, Ukraine, Moldova, and other nations actively engaged in the EU4Health programme. Its overarching objective is to bolster the resilience of public health systems against the multifaceted threats posed by CBRN incidents.

Through a multifaceted approach, the project aims to reinforce preventive measures, enhance preparedness levels, and optimize response capabilities in the face of potential CBRN emergencies. This entails comprehensive readiness and response planning, coupled with the strategic reinforcement of preparedness measures across borders to ensure a cohesive and coordinated response in times of crisis.

With an unwavering commitment to bolstering health security, the EU4Health Programme dedicates 5.8 million euros to fund this initiative over the ensuing three years. By leveraging this investment, the project seeks to catalyze collaborative efforts, foster knowledge exchange, and equip participating nations with the necessary tools and expertise to effectively mitigate the impact of CBRN threats on public health and safety. Through proactive measures and sustained cooperation, it aspires to fortify the resilience of communities and enhance the collective capacity to confront and overcome the challenges posed by CBRN hazards.

“One of the key goals of the European Health Union is to better prepare against health threats in a coordinated way at EU level and with our partner countries. The launch of today’s initiatives together with the WHO are a significant step towards building a stronger and more resilient health security system across the EU, Ukraine, and other European countries”, said Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides. “They are proof of the positive impact that EU support can provide for its citizens and beyond.”
