The Commission has selected 107 transport infrastructure projects to receive over 6 billion euros in grants from the CEF, the EU's strategic transport infrastructure investment facility. More than 80% of the funding granted by Brussels will go to projects to make the rail network and waterways greener, smarter and more efficient and to strengthen the EU-Ukraine solidarity corridors set up to facilitate import-export from the country.

The major cross-border rail links along the TEN-T core network were also prioritised for funding. These include a project dear to the Italian country, the Brenner Base Tunnel connecting Italy and Austria.

Not only the Brenner: other projects financed by CEF Transport

In addition to the Brenner, projects for rail connections between European countries also include Rail Baltica (connecting the three Baltic States and Poland with the rest of Europe) and the cross-border section between Germany and the Netherlands (Emmerich-Oberhausen).

Seaports in Ireland, Greece, Spain, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Poland will receive funding for the development of shore-side power supply to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships at berth.

To help make inland waterway transport fit for the future, the infrastructure along the cross-border Seine-Scheldt waterways between France and Belgium will be modernised. Inland ports on the Danube and Rhine, such as Vienna and Andernach, will also benefit from modernisation.

To further increase the safety and interoperability of EU rail transport, the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) will be installed on trains and railway lines in the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, France, Austria and Slovakia.

On the road, several EU Member States will deploy, in particular cooperative ITS (C-ITS) for safer and more efficient transport. Several Member States will receive support for European air traffic management projects in order to increase the efficiency of air transport and create a single European sky.
