Calls for the next generation of open internet technologies
As part of its Horizon Europe research and innovation program, the Commission has launched several funding calls to support projects working on key internet commons and building blocks. These calls provide grants to independent researchers, developers and organisations across Europe to create powerful new open source technologies.
The internet has become a vital part of modern society, underpinning everything from communication and commerce to education and entertainment. However, the core technologies powering the internet were designed decades ago without anticipating today's requirements for privacy, security, resilience and sustainability. The European Commission recognises the need to invest in developing the next generation internet - new open, trustworthy and decentralized technologies that put users back in control.
