Aware of the crucial role played by public funding in the development of the battery value chain, the Knowledge and Innovation Community dedicated to Energy (European Institute of Innovation and Technology's - EIT) has launched a new service to make it easier for start-ups and scale-ups to access public funds.
The goal is to guide and prepare entrepreneurs to access the large set of European funds currently available for the competitiveness of the European battery ecosystem.
In doing so, EIT InnoEnergy remains true to the mission given to it by the European Commission, which, in 2017, tasked it with advancing and promoting the activities of the European Battery Alliance "EBA."
What is the InnoEnergy EIT
The EIT InnoEnergy is one of nine Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs) planned within the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). These are - as the EU Regulation No. 1292/2013 establishing the EIT itself explains - autonomous partnerships "between higher education institutions, research institutes, businesses and other stakeholders in the innovation process, in the form of a strategic network (...) based on joint medium- and long-term innovation planning to realize the challenges of the EIT."
Indeed, the Institute's mission is to contribute to the EU's economic growth and competitiveness by strengthening the innovation capacity of the Member States and the Union to meet the major challenges currently present in various sectors, including energy and batteries.
To do so, the EIT promotes "synergies and cooperation between higher education, research and innovation at the highest level as well as by integrating these sectors with each other, including by encouraging entrepreneurship," that is, between the "tips" of the so-called "knowledge triangle."
Concretely, this approach is implemented in several ways. On the one hand, through the provision of funding, especially that directed at start-ups and scale-ups. On the other it involves the deployment of a network of relationships and contacts and the deployment of accompanying services, mentorship and training.
These strands of activity are also those followed by EIT InnoEnergy, the KIC aimed at supporting innovation in the field of sustainable energy, with a broad focus dedicated to the battery sector.
