Pilot programme to provide clarity for EU hydrogen market

Credit: Akitada31 via pexelsAiming to accelerate the development of its hydrogen market, on 3 June 2024 the EU officially launched a pilot mechanism designed to increase transparency on supply and demand. The initiative will provide a clearer picture of the market situation and facilitate connections between suppliers and off-takers, both within the EU and internationally.

Set to operate for five years, the pilot mechanism will collect, process, and provide access to information on demand and supply for renewable and low-carbon hydrogen and its derivatives. By doing so, it seeks to help European buyers match with suppliers, whether they are based in Europe or abroad.

Maroš Šefčovič, Executive Vice-President for European Green Deal, Interinstitutional Relations and Foresight, emphasised the strategic importance of this move: ‘By facilitating the matchmaking between suppliers and consumers, we will contribute decisively to accelerating the development of Europe's nascent hydrogen sector.
