MADE Alliance: Empowering African Farmers through Digital Innovation

This public-private partnership seeks to harness digital technologies to improve the livelihoods of farmers and ensure food security on the continent.

The Vision Behind MADE

The MADE Alliance is a collaborative effort led by the AfDB and Mastercard, with a goal of providing digital access to 100 million individuals and businesses in Africa over the next decade. The initiative is particularly focused on empowering smallholder farmers and enhancing women's participation in agriculture.

Vice President Kamala Harris emphasized the potential of Africa's youthful population during the launch of this initiative, stating that “the future is on the continent of Africa.” With a median age of just 19 years, there is immense potential for economic growth through investment rather than mere aid.

Key Components of the Initiative

  • Digital Access: The alliance will initially target three million farmers in Kenya, Tanzania, and Nigeria, providing them with essential digital tools and services.
  • Financial Inclusion: The AfDB plans to invest $300 million in digital infrastructure to incentivize participation among local banks and agricultural stakeholders.
  • Community Pass Platform: Mastercard aims to register 15 million users on its Community Pass platform within five years, facilitating access to vital services for underserved communities.
  • Partnerships: Other founding members include Heifer International, Microsoft, and Equity Bank Group, all committed to driving digital inclusion in agriculture.

The Role of Technology in Agriculture

The MADE Alliance recognizes that digital visibility is crucial for smallholder farmers. By integrating technology into agricultural practices, farmers can achieve:

  • Improved Market Access: Digital platforms will enable farmers to connect directly with buyers, ensuring they receive fair prices for their produce.
  • Access to Quality Inputs: Farmers will be able to procure high-quality seeds and agricultural supplies through digital channels.
  • Financial Services: The initiative aims to provide financial services tailored for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in agriculture.
