The European Commission has announced the creation of a new Climate City Capital Hub, an international finance resource designed to support cities participating in climate mitigation and adaptation efforts.
As cities grapple with the urgent need to reduce emissions and adapt to climate change, they face significant challenges in securing the necessary funding and technical expertise. The Climate City Capital Hub aims to bridge this gap, providing crucial support to help cities transition from climate action planning to implementation.
Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities: a key focus
Cities play a pivotal role in achieving the European Union's climate neutrality goals. Despite occupying only 4% of the EU's land area, cities are home to 75% of EU citizens and account for over 65% of the world's energy consumption and more than 70% of global CO2 emissions.
The EU Mission on Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities aims to deliver 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030, serving as experimentation and innovation hubs to enable all European cities to follow suit by 2050.
