The African Development Bank's Climate Action Window allocates over $31 million to enhance climate resilience in Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Djibouti, and Madagascar.
The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has approved over $31 million in funding through its African Climate Action Window (CAW) to bolster climate resilience in Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Djibouti, and Madagascar. This initiative underscores AfDB's commitment to addressing climate change impacts across vulnerable African nations.
Project Approvals and Objectives
In November and December 2024, AfDB's Board of Directors sanctioned funding for 41 pioneering climate adaptation projects, collectively valued at $321.75 million. These projects aim to:
- Combat climate change effects.
- Enhance livelihoods of vulnerable communities, with a focus on women and youth.
- Improve climate information systems.
The recent $31 million allocation will specifically support innovative projects in the four aforementioned countries, selected during CAW's initial call for proposals.
Country-Specific Initiatives
Sierra Leone
In Sierra Leone, the funding will support projects aimed at strengthening climate resilience in horticulture and pastoral farming. The initiative seeks to increase the self-sufficiency rate of key market garden crops from 10% to 30% and create 3,500 permanent jobs, with a significant share for youth and women. Additionally, it will facilitate the establishment of 200 new small and medium enterprises (SMEs) focused on climate adaptation.
South Sudan
South Sudan will benefit from projects designed to enhance climate resilience in agriculture and water resources management. These initiatives aim to improve food security and livelihoods for vulnerable communities by implementing sustainable farming practices and efficient water management systems.
Djibouti
In Djibouti, the allocated funds will support efforts to strengthen climate resilience in water resource management and coastal protection. The projects will focus on safeguarding water supplies and protecting coastal areas from the adverse effects of climate change, thereby securing livelihoods and promoting sustainable development.
Madagascar
Madagascar will receive support to implement climate resilience initiatives aimed at preserving biodiversity in national parks. The funding will be used to strengthen protection and sustainable use systems for natural capital and ecosystems, contributing to the country's environmental sustainability and resilience against climate change.
About the Climate Action Window
Established within the African Development Fund, the CAW aims to enhance access to climate finance for Africa's most vulnerable countries. It focuses on:
- Building climate resilience.
- Mobilizing resources for adaptation initiatives.
- Providing rapid and coherent access to climate finance.
The CAW seeks to mobilize $4 billion by 2025 to support these objectives.
The African Development Bank's recent funding approval through the Climate Action Window represents a significant step toward strengthening climate resilience in Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Djibouti, and Madagascar. By supporting targeted projects in these nations, AfDB continues to play a pivotal role in addressing climate change challenges and promoting sustainable development across the African continent.
