Batteries facilitate the rollout of zero-emission mobility and the integration of renewable energy sources, both vital components of the European Green Deal and the fight against climate change. By storing energy from intermittent renewable sources, batteries can help balance electricity supply and demand, accelerating the transition to sustainable energy systems.

The EU recognises the strategic importance of nurturing a competitive and sustainable battery value chain, and the need for this industry to be powered locally. Alongside regaining technological competitiveness to capture a significant share of the rapidly growing rechargeable battery market, the EU is therefore investing in long-term research to establish leadership in future battery innovations.

Expanding battery coverage through Horizon funding

To drive progress in this pivotal sector, the EU is allocating substantial funding through its Horizon Europe research and innovation programme.
