From solar power to green hydrogen: Africa’s 1 trillion euros plan

Pexels - Copyright: Alena KovalIn the contest of the COP27 held in Sharm-el-Sheikh, the Minister of Energy of the Republic of Mauritania together with the vice-president of the European Investment Bank (EIB) and other partners gave a preview of the “Africa’s Extraordinary Green Hydrogen Potential” report, a study that has now been recently published that represents the first detailed research of the feasible development of green hydrogen across the continent.

 The report combines analysis of investment opportunities focusing on three hubs: Mauritania - Morocco, southern Africa and Egypt with a roadmap of technical, economic, environmental and financial solutions to unlock commercial development. The report confirmed that by implementing this strategy, Africa could secure access to clean and sustainable energy on the continent and become a global energy player through green hydrogen exports.

Following the analysis of the report, the main goal in the next years will be to harness Africa’s solar energy in order to produce 50 million tons of green hydrogen a year by 2035. This plan could help secure global energy supply, create new jobs, decarbonize heavy indu
