REPowerEU to finance also gas and oil pipelines
The European Commission’s REPowerEU plan to be independent from Russian energy “as soon as possible” will be financed with a total of around 300 billion euros, divided among grants and loans. With the latter, Member States are allowed to finance also oil and gas supply infrastructures, effectively placing a derogation to the "Do No Significant Harm” (DNSH) to the environment principle fundamental to the Green Deal, and to the target of the digital transition.
On the 18th of May, the European Commission unveiled its plan to be independent from Russian energy “as soon as possible”. The Commission asked Member States to include a chapter in their national Recovery and Resilience Plans dedicated to the REPowerEU, through which also energy infrastructure for oil and gas supply can be financed, effectively placing a derogation to the "Do No Significant Harm” (DNSH) to the environment principle fundamental to the Green Deal, and to the target of the digital transition.
