Green light for IRIS2 programme for secure connectivity

Space - Photo by WikiImages da Pixabay The Council of the European Union has given its final approval to the regulation establishing the EU Secure Connectivity Programme for the period 2023-2027, with a budget of 2.4 billion euros. After the positive outcome of the vote by the Parliament during the February plenary session, this is the last step in the decision-making procedure.

The Union Secure Connectivity programme aims to build the EU's first multi-orbital satellite constellation, dubbed "IRIS2" - an acronym for Infrastructure for resilience, interconnectivity and security by satellite - that will provide more secure, better and high-speed satellite connectivity for the entire Old Continent.

Combining the benefits of low, medium and geostationary orbit systems, IRIS2 will ensure secure communication services to the European Union and member states, as well as broadband connectivity for citizens, businesses and government agencies.
