The EU Commission sets a public consultation to revise the Waste Framework Directive
In order to set new European Union food waste reduction targets and to revise the Waste Framework Directive (WFD), the European Commission has launched a public consultation for stakeholders that will be open until 16 august 2022 to produce an impact assessment.
The original targets included an increase by 2020 in the re-use and recycling of waste materials from households of an overall 50%. The same goes for the non-hazardous construction and demolition waste that should have been increased by 70% in the same period; finally, by 2025 recycling and re-use of food waste shall be increased to a minimum of 55 %, 60% (by 2030) and 65% (by 2035).
The 4 areas of intervention that will be addressed are prevention and reduction of waste, separate collection systems, and regulatory and economic incentives.
