Young people born between 1 July 2004 and 30 June 2005, living in the European Union and in third countries such as Liechtenstein, Norway, North Macedonia, Serbia, Türkiye and Iceland (countries associated with the Erasmus+ Programme) will have the opportunity to participate in this DiscoverEU call 2023 and travel in Europe for up to 30 days during the designated period that goes from 15 June 2023 and 30 September 2024.

To win a travel pass, people eligible to participate in the call will have to apply on the European Youth Portal, answer a multiple-choice quiz on general knowledge about the European Union and other EU initiatives and one tiebreaker questions. The application round will end on 29 March at 12:00.

The route that has been chosen for this year call is the so-called New European Bauhaus Route, and it aims to raise awareness in young people on the importance of making the EU ‘sustainable, inclusive and aesthetic’, following the New Bauhaus initiative’s goal of creating beautiful spaces that adapt to climate goals and ensure the inclusion of everyone.

This route will not be the only choice young participants could make, in fact there is still space to discover last year's initiative in the context of the European Year of Youth: the DiscoverEU Culture Route and ‘Youth discovers culture thanks to DiscoverEU in 2022’. The Culture Route in particular combines various destinations and cultural branches, including architecture, music, fine art, theater, fashion, design and more.

DiscoverEU travelers can visit the European Capitals of Culture, destinations added on the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List, or holders of the European Heritage Label. Moreover, as this programme keeps an eye on inclusivity and equity, DiscoverEU participants can also visit locations that present the Access City Award label, cities that are recognised as accessible to everyone regardless of age, mobility or ability.

DiscoverEU will also make available for participants a discount card with more than 40,000 discount possibilities on public transport, culture, accommodation, food, sports and other services available in the eligible countries.

“After this application round, we will have reached over one million applicants. This is quite an impressive number in less than 5 years of implementation. It shows the appetite of young Europeans to bond and explore our wonderful cultural heritage. And there is more. We are making DiscoverEU more and more inclusive. The DiscoverEU Inclusion Action, launched by the Erasmus+ National Agencies, will allow young people with fewer opportunities to take part in DiscoverEU on equal footing with their peers”, said Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabriel.
