What is the Next Generation Internet Initiative?

Launched in 2018, the Next Generation Internet is a European Commission initiative aimed at reshaping the internet by focusing on the needs of its users. Specifically, the initiative aims to develop technologies that address user needs in terms of privacy, trust, transparency, security, and inclusivity.

Following an initial investment of over 250 million euros during 2018-2020 to support more than a thousand internet researchers and innovators across hundreds of projects, the European Union has renewed funding for the NGI initiative under Horizon Europe (Pillar II, "Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness", Destination 4: "Digital, Industry and Space").

NGI provides resources to support an ecosystem of innovators with promising ideas and projects. It does so through specific actions that contribute to the overall logic and vision of the initiative, offering mentorship and support to innovators from the development of the innovative idea onwards.
