Call for Projects of Common Interest - Image by Ashraf Chemban from PixabayThe European Commission has launched a new call for proposals for major EU cross-border energy infrastructure projects included in the fifth list of Projects of Common Interest (PCIs). Grants worth 750 million euros are planned.

Projects of Common Interest (PCIs) are infrastructure interventions with positive effects on European countries, allowing them to integrate EU markets, diversify energy resources, and help end energy isolation.

To qualify as PCIs, projects must have a significant benefit for at least two EU countries and must increase competitiveness, improve the Union's energy security, and contribute to sustainability.

Between 2014 and 2020, the CEF Energy allocated 4.7 billion for studies and works to support the implementation of 107 projects of common interest, with the largest share of funding (about 89 percent) going to works, mainly for the electricity sector.

The Commission unveiled the fifth project list on 19 November 2021, which includes 67 initiatives
